Art Deco Palace? The Golden Gate Theatre opened in 1922 as a vaudeville theatre but later became a major movie theatre. For several decades it stayed the way it was showing movies after movies. In the 1960s it boasted a Cinerama screen. Unfortunately though by the 1970s it’s popularity had declined and began showing blaxploitation films. But by the end of the 1970’s it was restored and it reopened as a performance arts venue. Over the years I’ve seen posters for so many shows including Hairspray, Chicago, Mamma Mia!, Rent, Legally Blonde: The Musical and so many more.

Spamalot seems to be a pretty popular show so was walking past the theatre the other day and thought to take some pics.

The Golden Gate Theatre is located at 1 Taylor Street at Golden Gate Avenue?

Wicked In San Francisco – Orpheum Theatre

Monday, June 8, 2009 11:21 No Comments

Wicked which I have never seen is running at the Orpheum Theatre here in San Francisco. Everytime I walk past the Orpheum Theatre I see the huge lines of people waiting to go and enjoy the show. It seems to be very, very popular and apparently it got it’s start here in San Francisco several years ago before debuting in New York where it became what it is today. So perhaps I should go and catch the show before it’s gone for good.

The Orpheum Theatre is a beautiful piece of historic architecture right on Market at 1192 Market street near Civic Center and City Hall. The facade was inspired by a 12th century French cathedral which is completely obvious when you look at the photos below. It’s quite a beautiful building and one of my favorites here in San Francisco. The interior features a vaulted ceiling. It first opened in 1926 – twenty years after the great 1906 earthquake. The Orpheum is a historical landmark in the city of San Francisco.

Today the Orpheum Theater is one of most popular sites in San Francisco for folks coming to see Broadway shows.
